Before Zappos what other companies and projects were you involved in?

I worked at Vestal for a year before moving to Vegas, and prior to that worked with X-Games in their production department on the research team for summer and winter games. My first industry gig was interning with Kim Stravers at Sg Magazine during college, which definitely helped influence my decision and passion to work in the action sports industry. I've also been involved with B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer) for the past 6+ years and try to volunteer with them as much as possible when I can get out to the events.

What sports and hobbies are you actively involved in?

I grew up in Oregon near Mt. Hood, so snowboarding is my fave. I love all the board sports, but it's hard to get out there as much as I used to now that I live in Vegas. Get stoked on being outside and traveling, and am usually MIA on the weekends in the summer here. Also huge music and art fan, so I'm always trying to hit up shows in Vegas or wherever I'm at-usually Southern California or Portland.

What does your daily routine look like … take us through it?

Oh man..no day is ever the same for me! But for the most part it usually involves waking up at 5:30 to run with my dog, Monster or RedBull for breakfast, get going on emails, analyzing business with brands, start checking twitter and facebook throughout day to see what's going on, and working on new orders for future seasons. I'll usually have a rep in at least a couple times a week, so I'm in a lot of meetings checking out new product or brands and working with reps on our biz. A lot of times our reps will stop in just to say hi too and grab lunch or ice cream sandwiches with us, which always stokes me out. Afternoons usually involve a team or company meeting, maybe some beach ball volleyball down our team row, more email catch up and maybe a team happy hour.

How many people are on the staff (Zappos & Rideshop) and what are their roles (Rideshop)?

Currently we have about 900 people at our Zappos HQ here in Vegas, and 6 on our Rideshop team. Within the Rideshop we have specific buyers for different categories-shoes, clothing, accessories, and boards/hardgoods.

Tell us about Rideshop?

The Rideshop http://rideshop.zappos.com/ is a specialized part of Zappos.com that focuses on the action sports lifestyle. We all have a passion for the industry and the brands we work with, and are constantly working with our reps and vendors on ways we can stoke our customers out. We work with a wide variety of brands to offer special product for our customers, whether it be a limited edition or special collabo piece that nobody else carries, extra inventory in product every other shop is sold out of, or just a bigger selection of product, we want to represent our brands as best as we can on the site.

Hey readers! Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to E&I. I am looking forward to sharing with you some of the things I encounter. As a photographer I have always been torn between being part of the media who covers things I am interested in versus being a participant. I would much rather compete in a bike race than shoot a race! However, participation leads to inspiration. Even though there are times I should be working, I find that my time skating and surfing are really part of "my work."

Participation also involves sharing which is why I am here. Lately I have been able to meet and photograph some inspiring and influential people in my life and in the industry. Pro riders, pro builders, manufacturers, shapers, and artists. They are the real experts. I am just here to share some of what has rubbed off on me.

Someone once said, if you do what you love for a living then it is not work at all. It is not always true, but we need to remember this core message. If you are working too hard right now and feeling burnt, then go get recharged! Get back in the water, get back on your board, or back on two wheels. Get back to the thing that got you here in the first place. For me, it was important to bring my personal life into my work, but maybe some insiders need to put their work back into their personal life. Go ride! Even if it is just a few hours of freedom, you deserve it.

Liquid Force, the industry leader in wake and watersports' products, has teamed up with McCormick's Cable Park, the nation's only clock-wise cable, in a partnership agreement.

In the new partnership, Liquid Force becomes the official wakeboard, binding, wakeskate, and life vest brand supplying state of the art products for wakeboarding and wakeskating to McCormick's pro shop and rental office.

"We are so excited to be teaming up with the top brand within our industry," said McCormick's owner Michael McCormick.  "Not only can we offer our guests first class boards with the latest Liquid Force design innovations, but also Liquid Force's other quality products, such as vests, board shorts, t-shirts, hats, towels and ropes and handles, which are all available for purchase in our pro shop."

"We are really pumped to start a long-term partnership with the southeast's top cable wake park," said Liquid Force Vice President of Sales and Marketing Don Wallace. "McCormick's is one of the country's top cable parks and is sure to grow the sport throughout the entire Southeast.  With so many of our top pros within driving distance, McCormick's is the perfect training ground for Team LF!  We are stoked to help contribute to the future success of the park."  Liquid Force will have multiple branded rails, kickers and obstacles at McCormick's Seffner, FL facility.

At McCormick's, both first-timers and experienced riders can wakeboard, wakeskate, water ski and kneeboard with or without a boat. On the cable, riders are pulled around the 10-acre lake at approximately 20 miles per hour by a circulating cable system that runs 35 feet above the water.  There is also a boat lake on-site that is available for lessons and training.

The McCormick's Cable Park facility is located about an hour from Orlando and 30 minutes from Tampa.  McCormick's is open at noon on Monday and Wednesday through Friday, closed Tuesdays, and from 10am till dark on weekends.

ASR rolls into San Diego this week with three unique show environments and dozens of events including skate contests, runways, demos, premieres and parties. Not only is ASR where action sports takes care of business for the coming season, but also an opportunity to network with 18,000 peers, while appreciating the unique vibe of action sports.
 
On the business side, free seminars provide a forum where the industry can learn from market experts. During ASR, BRA is hosting a variety of retail-focused educational programs starting off with the Retailer Survivor Series, which is a full-day program focused on merchandising and digital retailing on February 2nd. The 15 seminars offered throughout ASR include everything from anti-counterfeiting to building skateparks in your community and ways to capitalize on the recovering economy.
 
The ASR Runway puts young contemporary and juniors' apparel, footwear and accessory trends for fall in motion twice during ASR. The flirty, fast-paced show titled "A Royal Affair" comes alive on Wednesday and Thursday, at 3:00 in Hall E.
 
Skate takes center stage as two $10,000 prize purses are given out over two days in San Diego. On Wednesday at 2PM, Volcom's Best Trick Jam takes over ASR's 64' mini-ramp. In an explosive finish at the final stop of the US Snowboarding Grand Prix this past weekend, three Grenade team riders showed Park City and the world who's ready for the Olympics.  A little over two weeks away, the 2010 Winter Olympics will witness the feats of Grenade team riders and Olympic first timers Louie Vito, Scotty Lago, and Greg Bretz on the men's 2010 Olympic Snowboarding Team.

Of the four pipe athletes competing on the men's halfpipe team, three will be representing the US of A and rockin Grenade Gloves.  Bretz' 4th place finish on Saturday held him in contention with Luke Mitrani (3rd) and JJ Thomas (5th).  The coaches' final decision, however, came down to who would best rep the US in the Olympics, and Grenade's Bretz took the cake.

Following the recent departure of former Elan Snowboards Division Manager Alexander Klinger, Elan Snowboards has announced a number of organizational changes across its senior management team.

Newly appointed Elan & Artec Snowboards Sales & Marketing Manager Dragan Gojkovic and Elan & Artec Snowboards Programme Manager Bojan Poljansek will now lead the team responsible for ensuring the continued success of both brands. Moving into 2010 and beyond, Elan Snowboards will continue to cement its reputation as one of the world's most authentic snowboard brands, and remains as focussed as ever on the ongoing development of technologically superior snowboarding products designed with the needs of passionate riders in mind.

Last week I worked the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah doing some production assisting and promotional work. I was lucky enough to sit through a screening of Banksy's first film "Exit Through the Gift Shop".  I'm not going to give the whole story away because if you are a fan of Banksy or street art in general this film is a must see. However I will give you the gist of the story line, we all know that street artists conceal their identity to avoid prosecution. In this film a french shopkeeper attempts to meet someone who has closed them self to the public eye.

"‘Exit Through the Gift Shop' is one of those films that comes along once in a great while, a warped hybrid of reality and self -induced fiction while at the same time a totally entertaining experience," said John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, in a statement.

Sometimes in design, you are asked to draw, mockup somthing that you think looks rad on paper or on the computer screen. But in reality, you have no idea how the factory is going to execute your work. Well , i still dont know how they got this tyedye pattern on an earbud headphone, but it looks good. Matix headphones. I played with various patterns,etc. And it turned out OK.. kinda neat, actually

At February's ASR show, IPATH and the Nibwaakaawin Native-American non-profit foundation will be hosting "A Path to Wisdom," an art auction and party held to benefit All Nations Skate Jam.  Taking place on Wednesday February 3 in room MR 23A from 4 pm to -6 pm, "A Path to Wisdom" will feature skateboard art by some of Indian Country's best artists and skaters, as well as skate legends and pros from around the world.

Nibwaakaawin, which is the Ojibway tribe's word for wisdom, is a 501(c)(3) skate-centered Native-American non-profit foundation dedicated to empowering Native youths' creativity, pride, cultural identity and healthy physical activity through skateboarding.  Proceeds from the event will go to support the All Nations Skate Jam, the world's largest inter-tribal skate competition for Native youth, held each year in Albuquerque, NM. 

The All Nations Skate Jam is an offshoot of the All Nations Skate Project, a unique skateboard-centered outreach program that aims to provide safe and healthy recreational activities and lifestyle choices to at Native youth who are at high risk for a variety of negative health and societal elements, ranging from childhood obesity to drug abuse, and suicide.  The All Nations Skate Project aims to direct the popularity of skateboarding among Native youth towards essential life-long skills and positive physical and mental heath benefits.

Together SIMA & BRA Aim to Bring More Leadership Power to Surf Summit 13

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) and Board Retailers Association (BRA) are proud to announce they have joined forces to present Surf Summit 13, to be held May 12-15, 2010 in Los Cabos, Mexico. 

This year the annual Surf Summit conference will be taken to the next level by unifying the SIMA and BRA conferences into one event that will truly encompass and showcase the entire surf industry. With a larger manufacturer and retailer presence and a stronger representation of the industry's top leaders, Surf Summit 13 will be a more complete union of the tribe.

"Surf Summit can only be made better by including the Board Retailers Association members and staff," said Doug Palladini, SIMA President and VP of Marketing for Vans. "I'm really pleased that the BRA leadership agrees in all the mutually beneficial gains that can be generated by combining our forces for this important leadership event going forward."

Each year, Surf Summit attendees address important issues facing the surf industry, share ideas, network and help shape the future of the industry. The format for Surf Summit 13 will be similar to years past with surf sessions in the morning, educational seminars in the afternoon, and attendee dinners and events at night. All SIMA and BRA members are encouraged to unite the tribe by attending Surf Summit 13.

Project BLUE, the surf industry initiative where leading brands support the non-profit Surfrider Foundation through a co-branded and limited edition product line, is excited to announce that American Express has donated $10,000 to Surfrider as a part of their role in supporting project BLUE.

American Express joined project BLUE as the program's first ever payments partner just before the 2009 holiday shopping season.  As part of their initial involvement, American Express assisted in the re-launch of project BLUE's "All I want for the holidays is a clean ocean," e-card campaign.  The campaign was promoted through traditional and social media channels, including a Twitter campaign, Facebook contest involving new Nixon watches and headphones and an online advertising buy on Surfline and SURF.

The U.S. Olympic Committee Friday bestowed its highest honors on three U.S. Ski Team athletes on the eve of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) was named the 2009 USOC SportsWoman of the Year, nordic combined skier Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO) was honored as SportsMan of the Year and monoskier Stephani Victor (Park City, UT) earned Paralympic SportsWoman of the Year.

"Today we recognize and congratulate the best athletes that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement had to offer in 2009," said USOC Chief of Sport Performance Mike English. "And it's only fitting that the biggest stars over the past year will now help lead Team USA into competition in Vancouver beginning three weeks from today. These award recipients stood apart from a distinguished list of nominees both on and off the field of play and their accomplishments provide inspiration and excitement for all Americans."

SportsWoman of the Year Lindsey Vonn dominated in 2009 en route to becoming one of the most successful female skiers in U.S. history. The alpine skier was crowned overall champion of the 2009 Audi FIS World Cup, including titles in downhill and super G. The two-time Olympian recorded a U.S. record nine World Cup wins in a single season. She surpassed Tamara McKinney's records for the most World Cup victories (19) and World Cup podium finishes (45). She capped her year with gold medals in the downhill and super G at the 2009 FIS World Championships in Val d'Isere, France. Friday she won her 29th career World Cup in Italy. Vonn becomes the first U.S. Ski Team athlete to win SportsWoman of the Year since Picabo Street in 1998.

"This is a huge honor, especially with the Olympics just a few weeks away," Vonn said. "This past year has been amazing and because of that, it's been so cool to see how many people are getting excited about alpine skiing. Regardless of whether I win a race or crash, I get so many notes of encouragement from fans. That says something special about the Olympic spirit. It isn't something that lives in just the athletes; it also lives in everyone who supports what we love." "Not only is Lindsey an accomplished World Champion athlete, but she is an amazing role model and motivator for youth," said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt. "She is a great representative of our sport, our country and the Olympic movement."
